Joan’s Men and Why We Love Them

With the latest Golden franchise coming to a successful close, loyal fans of the show could take a deep sigh of relief as 61-year-old Joan Vassos accepted Chock Chapple’s marriage proposal on a windy, white sand beach in Bora Bora.
Much like the first Golden Bachelor series, where there were many confident female contestants hoping to find love with Gerry Turner, the same was true for the Golden Bachelorette series. This time, it was with 27 available, handsome men longing to find love… one last time.
The world watched with fascination as late-in-life matchmaking unfolded every week right before us. But for some reason, this series was quite different and pleasantly surprising from the show’s usual cast of characters.
The emotional depth shown by the male contestants came as a definite surprise. Throughout the show, they developed authentic friendships and offered one another heartfelt emotional support, displaying a level of vulnerability rarely seen in earlier seasons of the series. Their camaraderie was highlighted in poignant moments, such as one contestant opening up about seeking closure after his late wife’s passing. He received his long-awaited peace from Guy Gansert, an ER doctor, with his explanation about her passing. It was a story that deeply moved viewers.
Another dear story shared by a strong-figured man that touched many hearts was how this widower was emotionally struggling with guilt for even being on the show. He felt it would appear as disregard for the memory of his deceased wife. The heart-rending story continued as he shared his wife’s love of hummingbirds. As he walked outside and contemplated leaving the show, a hummingbird appeared and flew around his head and heart. He felt it was a sign from his wife that he should continue his search for love.
Having a wonderful conversation with one of Joan’s men, Bob Kilroy, and from my own take-away from watching the Golden Bachelorette, I have created a short list for anyone still wondering about a second (or third or fourth) go at love.
Love Lessons for Late in Life
- Keep your belief in love.
- Know that it’s not too late.
- Being vulnerable is your superpower.
- Have an open mind.
- Embrace adventure.
- Let go of disappointment, pain, or anger from past relationships.
On the Golden Bachelorette, the men’s vulnerability created strong bonds among them. These new friendships became their “fuzzy blankets” throughout the emotional roller coaster of taping the show. It’s also what made them so likable, dare I say loveable—valuable lessons for all of us.
